Each year, over 13,000 children are reported missing in Maryland and 1 in 5 women will report being sexually assaulted in the United States. Understanding that these type of offenders rely on the vulnerability of their victim, Darnell Murphy decided to do the most important thing he could; educate others on how to protect themselves during an attack. "It's something most people don't think about or even believe will happen to them, but what if it did," he questioned? What would you do if you were attacked?Last weekend, at Kicked Up Fitness in Annapolis, MD, Darnell Murphy, a professional mixed martial artist and personal trainer, answered that question by teaching women, men, and children practical tools of self defense. The two day seminar included techniques used for ground and standup attacks, and even an impromptu Q&A by the kids in attendance. "I was amazed at how he (Murphy) was able to keep all the kids engaged. He was funny and informative. My kids loved it," was said by a few of the seminar's attendees.

With both days completely sold out, Murphy's seminar reflected the diversity and eagerness of people willing to learn effective techniques in self defense. From the mother also hoping her children would gain more confidence, to the advanced fitness enthusiast wanting to add more knowledge to his repertoire, everyone who attended benefited from this successful event. "I honestly didn't know what to expect," said an out of breath attendee sipping on water during her break from ground defense scenarios. "But," she added, "It was so worth the investment. I'm glad my girlfriend talked me into coming and I look forward to the next one!"
After the class wrapped up on its final day, Murphy was asked how he felt about his first self defense seminar? "It was really great. Seeing everyone that came out to support my event was incredible but knowing I am helping the community that has given so much to me is truly rewarding."
Murphy will be adding more self defense seminars to his event schedule soon but he doesn't plan to do this alone. He has a very supportive team of family and friends all willing to lend their expertise to Murphy's mission: to help raise awareness and prevention on serious issues, like domestic violence, kidnapping, and sexual assault.
Murphy's next seminar will feature special guest Jared Tipton. A student and trainer at Level Up Fitness, Tipton is also the 2014 WKA North American 125lbs. Muay Thai Champion and 4th place semi-finalist of the WKA tournament recently held in Italy. You won't want to miss this highly anticipated event.
